The world's first 'green' supercar

Driving prototypes is practically useless. It's next to impossible to get a feel for what the production version is capable of, and you rarely get a chance to explore the limits. Our time with the Ronn Motor Company Scorpion didn't change that sentiment, but it did give us a glimpse into the upstart's future and how its program is progressing since the concept's introduction at last year's SEMA show. Tooling around Sacramento in the V6-powered, hydrogen-injected roadster, the unmuffled exhaust made us almost as uncomfortable as the lack of seatbelts. But to the company's credit, the Scorpion is a rarity in the show-car world – a concept that actually drives. So when the call came from Texas to get some wheel-time in the Scorpion, we jumped at the chance. Hell, Arnold Schwarzenegger personally invited the Ronn Motors crew to the Capitol to get a closer look... who are we to deny the chance to hold court with the Governator?.....More info & Pictures......

2010 Porsche 911 GT3

The great thing about being Porsche – you know, aside from making Cayenne-loads of money and buying enormous companies like Volkswagen – is that you've always got another new model to unveil. The 911 range alone spawns an endless succession of derivatives, and just when they're done with one generation, they give it some new headlights and bore out the flat-six and presto! A brand new 911, and all the variants thereof. The latest, which Porsche unveiled here at the Geneva Motor Show, is one of the more hardcore versions. The new GT3 packs a 435-hp naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter boxer six that can rocket the Teutonic terror to 60 mph in a tick over four seconds. Be warned: This is a driving-focused package geared more towards enthusiasts than country-club goers. Decked out in bright red with a giant rear wing and more vents than an air-conditioner factory, the new GT3 looked every bit the business at the back of Porsche's Geneva show stand.....More info......

Renault Megane RS

Renault has earned its place as the pan-European king of the hot hatch. But with new contenders like the MINI JCW and Alfa GTA vying for the throne, Renault knew it would have to up its game to hold on to the title. Fortunately, it brought out a slick new Megane to replace the old pillbox version, leaving Renaultsport enthusiasts frothing at their wine-and-cheese-stuffed mouths for a performance version. Renault finally obliged at the Geneva Motor Show with the highly-anticipated new Megane RS.....More info & Pictures......

SSC Ultimate Aero EV claims 200 mile-range, 10 minute recharging

The unique curves of a supercar tend to attract a lot of attention. But these days, some people are likely to turn away from a sleek and powerful automobile once they learn it guzzles more gasoline than a Hummer. Thankfully, those people are usually the type that can't afford them in the first place. In any case, the real spotlight getters now come with fuel saving efficient power plants. The guys from Silicon Valley kicked off a new trend with the creation of Tesla. Following in the Roadster's footsteps we first saw Ronn Motor Company announce their hydrogen supplemented 40 miles-per-gallon Scorpion HX, and now Shelby Supercars has thrown their hat into the ring. We were first teased with a few specs on an Ultimate EV last July, and now a few more details of the system have been put into words.....More info & Pictures......

Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo

The Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo set the new World’s Fastest Production Car record with an average top speed of 255.83 mph.

SSC used a turbo V8 outputting 1183 HP and 1094 lbs. of torque. The use of lightweight carbon fiber materials allows for a low dry weight of 2750 lbs. giving the Aero TT the production record for lbs/hp ratio at 2.33.....More info & Pictures......

Rinspeed "Senso" - The car that senses the driver

"The driver and not the technology should be the focal point of a car," observes the head of Rinspeed, Frank M. Rinderknecht (49), summing up the fundamental idea behind his latest concept car offering: the "Senso". Due to be presented jointly by the famous Swiss automotive design and solutions specialist, Rinspeed, and Bayer MaterialScience, one of the world's largest plastics producers, at the Geneva Motor Show from March 3-13, 2005, the innovative "Senso" was developed in cooperation with the experienced engineering specialist, Esoro. Johannes Seesing (51), who specializes in automotive applications at Bayer, says: "Together with our partners in the automotive industry, we are already carrying out research on the car of tomorrow. The "Senso" is an outstanding example of unconventional ideas and applied lateral thinking."More info & Pictures......

„iChange“ Alters its Shape - and Automotive Thinking

The Swiss auto powerhouse Rinspeed presents the ‘iChange,’ the world’s first car whose body adapts to the number of passengers on board. For Rinspeed boss Rinderknecht the vehicle is more than just a clever concept car. “The „iChange“ is a symbol for the fundamental changes the auto industry undergoes worldwide. And it is clear that only those companies will survive that have innovative answers for the demands of a new automotive era.” The visionary Rinderknecht is convinced that the days of gas-guzzling behemoths are coming to an end: “The „iChange“ is a signal for the coming global changes to individual mobility. We need to be ready to meet these challenges with new ideas.”.....More info & Pictures......

Rinspeed Splash - A Dream Comes True

In what has become a fond tradition Rinspeed Design, the Swiss creative powerhouse for automotive concepts and emotions, presents yet another surprising and astounding attraction at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. To celebrate their 10th concept vehicle the Rinspeed crew has created the

Rinspeed "Splash”.

Under the ultra-light carbon-composite skin lies much more than just an agile and lively sports car. The Rinspeed “Splash” is the true incarnation of a really cool and fun sports toy. At the push of a button a cleverly thought-out hydraulic mechanism transforms the sports car into an amphibious vehicle. But that alone wasn’t enough for Frank M. Rinderknecht (48), founder and boss of Rinspeed. A highly complex integrated hydrofoil system enables the “Splash” to ‘fly’ at an altitude of about 60 cm above the water.....More info & Pictures......

Rinspeed’s Zero-Emission World Debut at the Geneva Motor Show - a Green “Fish” with Q-Factor

Thirty years after the movie thriller ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ hit the silver screen “sQuba” is the first car that can actually ‘fly’ under water.

“Dive it again, James!” If the situation gets too hot for the secret agent he’ll go underground - or under water. So demonstrated impressively by Roger Moore in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me” in 1977 when he dove below the waves in a sleek vehicle that moments before seemed to be an ordinary car. The only problem: The scene never really took place; it was an animation.

With the “sQuba,” the world’s first real submersible car, the movie fake now becomes reality for visitors of the Geneva Motor Show (March 6th - 16th, 2008). Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht (52) is known for his extraordinary automotive creations. The acknowledged James Bond enthusiast and Swiss automobile visionary kept revisiting this scene in his mind over and over: “For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water. Now we have made this dream come true.”.....More info & Pictures......

KTM X-Bow ROC unveiled

Late last month we learned that KTM was planning to bring two new versions of its X-Bow roadster to the Geneva Motor Show. One of those machines is the new X-Bow ROC edition, and our men on the scene managed to assemble a gallery of live shots of the new model that you can view in the gallery below. This new ROC edition was built to commemorate the Austrian firm's inclusion in last year's 2008 Race of Champions, so it fittingly features a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque shell and adds a sports exhaust to Audi's 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder mill that's shared with other models in the range. Unique paint and badges also help set it apart from lesser X-Bows.....More info & Pictures......

Lotus increases performance, efficiency of 2010 Exige S

Lotus has unleashed a slightly revised Exige S for the 2010 model year at the Geneva Motor Show, and thankfully, it seems the U.K.-based automaker has for the most part chosen not to mess with a good thing. The bulk of the changes are minor updates to the car's outer skin, including a new front fascia with larger openings for the radiator and twin side-mounted oil coolers. Out back, a new composite rear wing reduces drag while still putting down 42 kilograms (93 pounds) of downforce at 160 km/h (about 100 mph). We think the facelift makes the Exige look a bit more masculine and aggressive.

Improvements made to reduce weight and aerodynamics also have the desirable effect of increasing overall efficiency. Fuel economy remains stellar for a vehicle of this caliber at 33 mpg on the European Combined Cycle. As Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive of Group Lotus plc, asks, "How many cars have performance figures of 0 - 100 km/h in 4.77 secs but produce only 199 g/km CO2?" Answer: None that we know of.....More info & Pictures......

New '09 Kawasaki ZX-6R

Team Green Substantially Revamps Its Middleweight Contender For 2009.
It's no secret that Kawasaki's ZX-6R has been taking a pummeling from the competition for the past couple of years. Although the chassis is one of the better-handling units available, the engine was a little short on steam, a critical deficiency in the ultra-competitive 600 class. And for a manufacturer that prides itself on a reputation for power, it was a situation that bordered on embarrassment. With the now-standard two-year development window for the ZX-6R approaching in '09, you just knew that Team Green wasn't going to mess around with the next generation 600. And by all appearances, it looks like the boys at Honda and Yamaha better sharpen their swords-the new ZX-6R is heavily redesigned and looking to take names.....More info & Pictures......

New '09 Buell 1125CR - First Look

Now that the liquid-cooled Helicon engine built by Rotax has made its debut in the Buell lineup with the 1125R, the company is quickly moving to expand its application with new models, beginning with the 1125CR for '09. Dubbed a "21st century caf racer," the 1125CR switches the 1125R's half-fairing for a minimalist flyscreen over its V-shaped dual-bulb headlight, and replaces the bars integrated into the top triple clamp with a traditional clubman-style handlebar setup. The only other notable changes are an approximate eight percent drop in final drive ratio for quicker acceleration, and a $300 cheaper sticker price than the 1125R, at $11,695. The 1125CR should be in Buell dealers by the time you read this.....More info & Pictures......

2009 Yamahas YZF-R1 And FZ6R

Yamaha hosted its annual dealer meeting in Las Vegas this past September, introducing two new sportbike models along with the Star V-Max featured elsewhere in this issue. Of note to sportbike riders are an all-new entry-level middleweight-the FZ6R-and a revised YZF-R1. We had been anticipating an updated R1, but the scope of the changes is much broader than we expected and include some interesting MotoGP trickle-down technology......More info & Pictures......

2009 Ducati Streetfighter - Late Braking

When Ducati unveiled it's 09 model lineup we knew something was in the works when the Monster line included only two models-the 696 and 1100, both of which are air-cooled. What of the liquid-cooled line? Surely there would be something to replace the aging S4Rs. The obvious next progression of the Monster was sure to be a 1098-engined model, right? Well, yes, but since the line had received a facelift Ducati decided to revamp the entire model range and do something special for the 1098 power plant. The result is the Streetfighter. In a somewhat unexpected move, Ducati has separated its liquid-cooled and air-cooled lines. Drawing inspiration from caf-racers of the past, the Streetfighter takes its superbike heritage it knows so well and given it a distinctly Italian twist-shedding the fairings, fitting some proper bars, mounting a single headlight and making the bike look genuinely sinister.....More info & Pictures......

New BMW K1300 Series For '09

BMW's K Bikes Get A Bigger And Stronger Engine, Plus New Suspension Upgrades
BMW's four-cylinder K-bikes all receive a new larger 1293cc engine (from the previous 1157cc), with the 136cc displacement boost achieved via a 1mm bore increase and additional 5.3mm stroke. Connecting rods that are nine grams lighter work with 12-gram-lighter pistons and revised cam timing to give an extra 8.0 horsepower (for a claimed total of 175 at the crank) at 9250 rpm-1000 rpm lower than the 1200-and 7.4 ft-lb more torque (now 103 ft-lb) over the old engine. Also assisting in this area is a redesigned exhaust system utilizing a significantly shorter muffler and an exhaust valve in the collector; weight for the stainless steel unit has dropped from 22.9 pounds to 20.7 pounds, complete with catalytic converter.....More info & Pictures......

Weber Sportscar: the World’s Fastest Street-Legal Sports Car

Like the Millennium Falcon, the Weber Sportcars faster one may not look like much, but it sounds like it might be capable of besting the former's Kessel Run time of under 12 parsecs. Hell, after looking over the manufacturer's stats, we think that the faster one might be able to tear a gaping hole in the space/time continuum.Billed by its Swiss maker as the world's fastest street legal sports car, the faster one's ugly-but-aerodynamic carbon fiber body covers a vehicle that weighs in at a scant 1,984 pounds (900 kg). That mass is distributed 50:50 and is propelled by a 900-horsepower/774 lb-ft twin-supercharged V8 that begins its life as a garden-variety General Motors LS7 before Weber tears it apart and rebuilds it to its own specifications. The twin-blown eight is then mated to an in-house-developed 6-speed sequential gearbox. Power is directed to an intelligent AWD system (also developed in-house) that can send a maximum of 36% of power to the front wheels. Stated performance numbers are of the astonishing variety: 0-62 mph in 2.7 seconds; 0-124 in 6.6 seconds; 0-186 in 16.2 seconds; and a top speed said to be over 248 mph.
